Professional Scenario#
You are advising an AI governance board reviewing a proposed high-impact AI deployment. The immediate task is to decide what evidence would make a recommendation credible, what risks remain unresolved, and what should happen next. Method Pattern#
State the stakeholder decision in one sentence.

Failure Modes To Check#
Measurement mismatch: the metric optimizes something adjacent to, but not identical with, the real decision.
Context loss: important operational or human factors are absent from the data.
Automation bias: users may over-trust a score, classification, or recommendation.
Equity and access risk: affected groups may experience different error rates or burdens.

Subject-Matter Lesson#
Ethical analysis is disciplined reasoning about what ought to be done, not a synonym for compliance or favorable public opinion. Consequentialist reasoning compares expected benefits and harms; duty-based reasoning asks whether rights and obligations are respected even when outcomes are attractive; justice examines how benefits, burdens, and opportunities are distributed; care ethics attends to dependency, vulnerability, and relationships.
The lab applies all four lenses to hold, limited-pilot, and full-release options. Scores are prompts for comparison, not objective moral measurements. The important evidence is where frameworks disagree and which facts would change the judgment. A limited pilot may promise learning and benefit while still violating a consent duty or placing experimental burdens on people with little power.
Students should change one fact rather than a preferred score and explain which framework responds. Moral residue is the obligation or harm that remains even after choosing the best available option. A defensible recommendation names affected parties, non-negotiable rights, uncertainty, mitigation, voice, recourse, and the reason rejected alternatives were not acceptable.
